Fluency assessments for Older Students
Do you have any middle or high school aged fluency students? If so, I have a great tool for you to add to your toolbox. It is Dr. Scott Yaruss’ OASES for teens (OASES-T). OASES stands for “Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering.” The first time I used it was for a high school aged student. The information elicited was EXCELLENT and SO helpful.
The OASES is an inventory of the student’s perceptions of their communication skills. It is divided into four sections: 1) General Information, 2) Reactions to Stuttering, 3) Communication in Daily Situations and 4) Quality of Life. Each section is comprised of between 15 to 25 items. The student rates each item on a five-point scale with 1 being least impactful and 5 indicating the most significant impact. The individual items are written to elicit the student’s feelings and perceptions about specific situations. If your student has difficulty reading, the items can be read to them and then rated. An “impact score” and an “impact rating” are calculated for each section. A descriptive impact rating is derived from the impact score. The impact rating descriptors are 1) mild; 2) mild-to-moderate; 3) moderate; 4) moderate-to-severe and 5) severe.
A total impact score is obtained for all of the items. What I found most helpful, were the impact ratings for the individual sections. By comparing each section, I was able to see where my student was having the most difficulty. While we are usually aware of our student’s difficulties, finding out their opinion is not only enlightening, it is critical to determine the focus of treatment. Teens are much more likely to give this kind of information through an objective questionnaire such as this, as opposed to talking about it informally. This inventory provides a vehicle for approaching difficult topics.
I highly recommend using the OASES-T in conjunction with your quantitative assessment. The information you gain will help you design the best treatment plan for your student.
